Stuart Woods received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of Georgia in 1959. Manchester, Georgia, is where Woods was born and where he received his primary schooling. In the months after his graduation from college, he enrolled in the Air National Guard and underwent basic training for two months.

After getting married to Jeanmarie (who had previously been known as Cooper) in January 2013, the pair moved in together and shared their lives with a Labrador Retriever called Fred in three different locations: Key West, Florida; Mount Desert Island, Maine; and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
