One Day is one of the top shows on Netflix at the moment, and this doesn't come as a surprise because it's based on the 2009 bestselling novel of the same name by David Nicholls. Fans of the book were eager to see if the television adaptation would be any good. This is the second adaptation of the book with the first being the 2011 hit feature film of the same name starring Anne Hathaway.

It's a new Netflix limited series consisting of 14 episodes. It tells a bittersweet decades-spanning love story between two people who meet for the first time at their college in 1988. Over the season, viewers get to know the two main characters as they continue to meet up on the same day every year to catch up. We watch them become friends, grow, pursue their dreams, find love with other people, grow apart, and ultimately get together.

But don't go thinking that this is a sweet rom-com. This is a romantic drama series, and there is one particular moment in the show that had me bawling my eyes out. If you read the book, watched the movie, or have already watched this series, you know exactly what scene I'm talking about. I'm still not quite over it. Honestly, it makes me think of the other sad shows on Netflix that I've watched recently. These types of shows definitely know how to pull at your heartstrings.

Grey's Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy is easily one of the best medical dramas of all time, and there's just no arguing that. Following the personal and professional lives of a group of doctors at a fictional hospital in Seattle, Grey's Anatomy has been stirring its viewers' emotions since the very beginning of the series. There have been so many gut-wrenching character deaths throughout the show that I still think of to this day.

Honestly, it seems like more doctors die in this show than patients. And it's the way these characters are killed off that makes it even worse. It's always a tragic death, and it's always a fan-favorite character who meets their demise. But I guess that's what I signed up for watching a medical drama series, right?

Maid

Maid stars Margaret Qualley as Alex, a single mother who after escaping an abusive relationship turns to housecleaning to make ends meet and to create a better life for her daughter and build them a better future. What makes this show so sad is seeing the main character constantly go through obstacle after obstacle while trying to stay afloat. Although she may sometimes hit a victorious moment, something bad always follows right behind it. There's just so much angst in this show that I had to take emotional breaks throughout. But it does have a happy ending, so that was good.

This Is Us

This Is Us is considered by many to be one of the saddest shows in TV history. But it's also one of the best family dramas. This show has so many tear-jerking moments, and you'll likely shed a tear with every single episode. It's a show exploring the theme of grief and topics such as illness and death. In its six-season run, we saw characters experience the loss of a baby, characters dying from various sicknesses and diseases, and many other unfortunate things. Overall, This Is Us is full of emotionally charged episodes, so it's not a show you can binge right through.

A show following the lives of a bunch of women in prison was bound to have emotional moments, but the main character deaths is what hurt the most. I'm not going to spoil anything, but there's one particularly heartbreaking moment in the series when a fan-favorite character is murdered. I can still remember the fan reactions to that scene.

Over seven seasons, viewers get to know all the characters, and while you'll love some right off the bat, others you'll eventually grow to love. That's why it's so emotional when some are killed off. But despite all the sad moments throughout the series, it's still a great show and will forever remain one of the best Netflix original series.
