The elder of two sons born to Jackson Ceufud (1916-1989) and Winnie Era (Blalock) Gibbs, he was born in Mocksville, North Carolina (1915–2000).

In 1959, Gibbs earned his diploma from Santa Fe High School, where he was the standout quarterback.

Gibbs studied at Cerritos Junior College before enrolling at Don Coryell’s San Diego State University (SDSU).

Gibbs received a bachelor’s degree from SDSU in 1964 and a master’s in 1966.

Gibbs began his career at San Diego State under Coryell as the offensive line coach (1964–1966).

He held the same post at Florida State under Bill Peterson from 1967 to 1968, then worked for John McKay at Southern California from 1969 to 1970 and Frank Broyles at Arkansas (1971–1972).
