Ronald Wayne Van Zant, the father of Melody Van, first met Judy Seymour in 1969 at The Comic Book Club through Gary Rossington. He later married her in 1972 and they were blessed with only Melody.

She was conceived in 1976.

In 1999, Judy Van Zant-Jenness opened Freebird Live, a music venue in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd souvenirs were inside, and Melody Van Zant shared possession of it.

Judy married Jim Jenness in addition to founding and running The Freebird Foundation until it was dissolved in 2001. The main vocalist, primary lyricist, and founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd was Ronald Wayne Van Zant, an American musician.

Melody Van Zant, an Australian distance swimmer, was born on July 23, 1968, in Melbourne, Victoria. Her sister is Tammy van Wisse.

In 1993 and 1994, she swam the English Channel in 8 hours, 35 minutes and 8 hours, 33 minutes, respectively. As a marathon swimmer, she completed the 2,438-kilometer Murray River in 2001.
